How a Yeshiva Otzar Is Built in Practice

It Starts With the Curriculum

The first step in building a real otzar is understanding what is being learned. At Beis Menachem Mendel in Tzfat, the bochurim study Nigleh — Gemara, Rishonim, and halacha — alongside Chassidus, centered on the Tanya and the Maamarim of Chabad. Each branch of learning requires its own set of core texts.

The roshei yeshiva map the seder: what is being taught this zman, what questions come up in chavrusa, what a bochur needs in front of him to go from a surface reading to a real understanding. That map becomes the purchase list.

Prioritization: What Goes First

Not every sefer can arrive at once. The campaign prioritizes in three tiers:

First: the texts used in every shiur — the Gemaras for the current masechta, the Tanya, the key Rishonim on the material being covered. These are the seforim that will be opened every single day.

Second: the reference layer — poskim for practical questions, Maamarim for depth study, Mishnah for daily review. These support the primary learning and get pulled off the shelf several times a week.

Third: the broader library — commentaries, responsa, historical works. These enrich the environment and allow bochurim to follow their curiosity beyond the set seder.

How Donations Move to Shelf

When a donor sponsors a set, the funds are allocated directly to that set's purchase. The yeshiva's administration places the order with known seforim suppliers in Israel. When the books arrive — typically within days to a few weeks — they are stamped, catalogued, and placed on the beis medrash shelves.

Donors who request updates receive confirmation when the set is received. The seforim are not held in a warehouse or used as general funds. Each set is a trackable, physical result.

Many campaigns raise general funds and leave allocation decisions opaque.
